home and community
about home&community, inc.
home&community, inc. was founded in Washington, D.C. in May 2000, at the request of low-income residents striving to improve their communities. We were among the early organizations providing truly interdisciplinary collaborations between residents, advocates, planners and educators, as they worked to change housing policy. The hallmark of our work was -- and continues to be -- providing tools empowering residents to train and educate other residents.
home&community's purpose is:
  • to serve low-income residents through capacity building;
  • to insure that at the local, state and national levels, residents and advocates play an important and integral part in the community development process -- from shaping the debate at the initial policy development stage, through the planning stage to the final stage of plan implementation and monitoring;
  • to advocate a meaningful holistic approach in saving and enriching low-income communities. Holistic development accesses the various mechanisms of change -- economic, social, moral, and political;
  • to facilitate coalition building around the issue of home and community;
  • to effect change in local, state and national housing and community development policies and institutions.

Seminars and Clinics
Sometimes, before you even meet with a decision maker, you have to get a large group of people together on the issues. Is everyone on the same page? What are the most effective strategies for addressing the issues? Organized groups are persuasive and provide positive and lasting benefits to ensure the health of the community.

home&community, inc. is here to provide the technical assistance groups need to get all member of the community together on the issues. We'll help you find advocates in your area and then work with you to schedule a time for members of the community to meet and strategize the issues.

We'll schedule site visits to facilitate community design charettes, or "Getting to the Table" day-long clinics or half-day seminars that tackle the housing and community development topics on site -- topics developed by local residents and allies. Seminars are small groups of not more than 25 and cover specific topics. Clinics are for larger groups of not less than 25 nor more than 300 that cover multiple topics. Fees for charettes are negotiated and fixed. Fees for "Getting to the Table" range between $0 and $5 per person, on a sliding scale.

Writing a Grant Proposal
At home&community, inc., we know that many communities struggle to realize their goals not because of lack of great leadership, but because they lack the funds and resources to implement their plans.

We have worked with residents all across the nation to craft successful proposals for getting the funds they need. We can help you, too.

Our success includes grants as large as $250,000 and as small as $5,000. They are from federal, state and local resources. In addition, we've assisted with drafting documents for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status for non-profit resident groups -- another important way for groups to become eligible for resources.

our services include:

  • identification of relevant grants and other resources
  • consultation with groups to determine approaches to grant seeking
  • drafting of grant proposals
Fiscal Sponsorship
Are you a small or emerging group (or an individual) working on social justice, food security, sustainability or community development issues?  Do you want to apply for grants and receive tax-deductible donations, but lack 501(c)(3) status?  We can help your program or project raise money!  We provide fiscal sponsorship services that establish eligibility for grants and charitable donations.  For a very low administrative fee – between 4% and 6% depending upon your project -- we’ll help you accept various donations.
Our services include:
  • accepting in-kind donations and online contributions (both credit card and check)
  • sending donation acknowledgement letters
  • monthly accounting of donations and expenses
  • consultation on letters of inquiry and grant proposals
  • review of Form 1023

Contact us to discuss whether your program or project is eligible.
